Amazon Author Rank is based on current and historical sales trends for all of an author’s books across all formats. Marketing Insights captures Author Rank daily, and your most recent data can be found in the Amazon section of the Author Engagement panel.
Overall Author Rank
Only the top 100 authors across all of Amazon have an overall rank, so most authors will not rank. Ranked authors are among the top sellers on Amazon and have increased merchandising opportunities and improved chances for consumer discovery and conversion.
Category Rankings
In addition to the overall Author Rank, Amazon also ranks the top 100 authors within each of their browse categories. Authors may rank in up to five categories based on the categories in which the their books are selling. When an author ranks in a category, this is a strong indication that the author is popular and/or highly influential in their niche.
Now what?
If your author is ranking, you want to make sure you are positioned to advantage of the author's popularity:
- Ensure the author's presences are up-to-date and include references to key titles.
- Take a look at the product pages for the author's books to make sure they are optimized to convert.
- If the author's profile has recently spiked due to a new book or media attention, consider updating your book descriptions accordingly.
- Consider an author-oriented campaign to generate interest and engagement across their works, targeting fans of the author, fans of the genre or category, and fans of close comp authors to expand your core audience.
- Similarly, if you publish works by other comparable authors in the same category, you might consider a co-branding campaign to leverage the strength of this author to boost awareness and sales across multiple authors.
